The stories we tell ourselves, and those we share, allow us to make sense of our reality. Each story connects us and in many ways empowers us to face our biggest fears. When you compare each other’s perspectives across the human race as a whole, you quickly see the power of diversity– where our wisdom comes from – what different people learn from their own experiences – and how individuals can retain the best parts about themselves while exposing the darkness they might otherwise hide.

This is what we rob ourselves of when we neglect to hear alternative narratives – voices that have been drowned out for too long, stories that deserve the light of day, that offer a better way forward. We deserve, as people of color, not only to tell our own stories but to also see those stories reflected onscreen and find them celebrated in popular culture. Until the day comes when the world expands its notion of what a hero is, we can be sure those who buck convention will continue to perform heroic feats and embody values that matter – Our values.
